Explanation:
<sapo< is right but did too much. The character is called a Rautezeichen. But the key on a Telefon is usually referred to only as a Raute, like in "Bitte drücken Sie die Raute".

The word actually is not even contained in German dictionaries with this definition. If you want to use a "true German term" then the choice must be "Nummernzeichen". Bitte drücken Sie auf das Nummernzeichen ... etc."
