This is from a manual for a machine that blows PET preforms into bottles. Here is some reference:
"The variable pitch functional unit is used to transfer the preforms from the oven unit to the blow press changing the configuration of the pitch."
"The pitch change transfer unit (3) makes it possible to move the transfer carriages, adapting the pitch existing between them at the oven unit exit and positioning them inside the blow press unit. The pitch change transfer unit (3) mainly comprises a guide (24), another guide (25) and a worm screw (26).

I do have some guesses, but I am not sure.
