paree Explanation: Pronounced puh-ree is more apt a word to be used in your sentence, although farishta and devdoot are its closer synonyms. So, "tum paree jitni sundar ho" is how "You are as beautiful as an Angel" would translate into Hindi. "Paree" literally means "fairy" but in Hindi or Urdu (Hindustani language), "farishta" or "devdoot" are never used as metaphors for beauty. Although a really "nice" person IS compared with a "farishta" in Indian literature. |

Devdoot, Farishta Explanation: Paree, as suggested by one, is only female angel, but angel may be of any sex, and hence Devdoot is more appropriate. Farishta is same in Urdu but a word used commonly in Hindi also. |

Farishta Explanation: you are as beautiful as an angel should be translated as 'tum farishtey jitne khubsurat ho'. 'pari/pur-eeh' means 'fairy' and it is not the same as 'angel'. It is gender specific. But 'farishta' is not gender specific. We can tell a child 'you are as beautiful as an angel' and use 'farishta' there but we can't use 'pari' in that context. Hindi and Urdu have many over lapping words and this should not pose any problem. 1. Rajpal English Hindi dictionary 2. Oxford hindi english dictionary |
