When I was nine years old, my father took me fishing. I had never been fishing and neither had he. He wasn’t much of an outdoors guy. He was an academic. A Latin teacher.

Explanation:
Questa potrebbe essere una soluzione, penso che in questo caso sia necessario sviluppare un po' la traduzione per rendere il significato perché purtroppo in italiano non c'è una traduzione più semplice e immediata per "outdoors"
