"According to one account, the Croatan Nation rounded up and burned every colonist on the island. Ina third account, these same Native Americans rescued the surviving townspeople dispatching all enemies. All stories have appeared in historical texts for the last two centuries, but none presents an explanation as to why the first English settlement in North America literally vanished without a trace."
