Il protagonista si fa stupidamente abbindolare da una ragazza che scompare da un giorno all'altro con l'anello di fidanzamento da 1000 sterline, avute in prestito peraltro da uno strozzino. Ora il protagonista torna dallo strozzino per spiegare l'accaduto...

"He postponed seeing S. for a week. By that time, any last hopes of his fiancé’s miraculous reappearance had vanished as surely as the engagement ring. He went to S.'s house and told him what had happened.

“Stitched up,” S. said. “By a wee girl, eh?” He shook his head. >>> “Lost it, did you, P.? Inside?”

"Ti sei fatto infinocchiare eh? E di brutto, pure..."

Potrebbe (me è solo un'intuizione) riferirsi al fatto che il tipo si è fatto fregare, aggiungendo con "Inside" che la fregatura è di quelle "profonde" cioè dure da mandare giù. Ripeto è solo la mia sensazione.
