Of course you can just say "grazie", which is the plain "thanks". "Grazie di cuore" (thanks by heart, literally) is a bit old fashioned but lovely if what are you thanking for is important for you :)

"Ti ringrazio" (I thank you) to a friend


Explanation:
or "La ringrazio" (with a capital "L") to someone you are not very familiar with; in fact, the English "you" in Italian splits into "tu" (you say this to friends or family members) and "Lei" (capital L) with which you address someone you are less familiar with.
