During the production of float glass, one side of the molten glass comes into contact with a bath of molten tin. Traces of tin or tin oxide metal are deposited on the surface of glass as it is removed from the molten tin bath. This surface of the glass is identified as the "TIN SIDE" surface of the glass. The opposite side of the glass is denoted as the "AIR SIDE". The presence of the tin is invisible to the human eye. Glass processors find it beneficial to know which surface of the glass is the tin side surface, since the tin side of the glass results in a smoother surface (among other reasons).

Per quanto concerne la produzione di vetro piano, a partire dalla fine degli anni Cinquanta è stato introdotto il processo float (Pilkington) in sostituzione dei precedenti metodi di tiratura.
Il prodotto che si ottiene (float glass) ha sostituito il cristallo ottenuto da molatura di vetro greggio tirato.
Nel processo denominato float glass, la pasta vitrea, proveniente dal crogiolo alla temperatura di 1100 °C, assume forma perfettamente piana in un forno a tunnel la cui base è formata da un letto di 7cm di stagno fuso. Questo è posto in atmosfera condizionata debolmente riducente, contenente azoto e idrogeno, in modo da non essere ossidato. Lo stagno leviga la superficie inferiore del vetro per diretto contatto, mentre la parte superiore si appiattisce per gravità essendo ancora allo stato semifuso. Nella produzione del vetro piano, il processo float glass sta sostituendo le tradizionali tecniche di laminatura e tiratura
