Otherwise we're going to expose ourselves to the mortal world.

La traduzione di Elena va benissimo, ma secondo me potresti anche avere un'altra opzione. Si tratta di un romanzo fantasy, giusto? Inoltre, suppongo che i protagonisti abbiano certi poteri.
Più che concentrarmi sul sole, visto che nella frase successiva si fa rifarimento al non essere esposti al mondo dei mortali, io trasformerei la frase in questo modo.

"Il piano dovrebbe prevedere qualcuno che faccia calare l'oscurità. Altrimenti, ci esporremo/correremo il rischio di esporci al mondo dei mortali."
