I'm not even sure if there should be a comma between the first two words. This phrase appears when a man is talking about an opera.

He had at one time thought of writing it in the form of the Italian opera. But he didn't. He wrote it as a single, writing thread with not a break from its spell.

さて、問題の件ですが、このオペラを書いた人は最初はイタリアンオペラを書こうと思ったが、結局はドイツオペラを書いたと解釈できます。最後のspellというのは力、つまりmagical power (spell)、魔力のことを指し、正統派(イタリア)オペラが持っている魅力や魔力を失わずに、ドイツ語のオペラを書いた、ということではないでしょうか。
