I am not sure how the asker want to say in a "nowadays" Japanese unless he changes the source phrase to fit nowaday's language.

agree  Can Altinbay: That's as good as any. For an action type book, you might go with なに、吸血鬼を起こした?followed by ばか者or something like that. They probably use バンパイア-as much nowadays, too. Oh, yeah - it will vary lots based on what the speaker is conveying.
