Now by rethought in comparison with other items in the survey, I came to the understanding that this may be highly probably "その他の小売" not referring to any specific type of existing stores. I thank you for all information. -
Based on the definition above (if you believe the NAICS definition is suitable), then "miscellaneous store retailers" are 'fixed POS' stores (ie. not online stores), *excluding* "new or used motor vehicles and parts; new furniture and house furnishings; new appliances and electronic products; new building materials; and garden equipment and supplies; food and beverages; health and personal care goods; gasoline; new clothing and accessories; and new sporting goods, hobby goods, books, and music" (要するに上記の他のお店のカテゴリにうまく当てはまらないもの[～以外の・その他の]) but *including* (for example) " florists, used merchandise stores, and pet and pet supply stores as well as other store retailers." You can find detailed definitions of each industry sector on the NAICS website. Retail industry classification definitions are here: http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/sssd/naics/naicsrch?chart_code... The definition for "General Merchandise" is vague, but I would guess that this is where a バラエティーショップ would fit in.
Adding up, with other similar options, I guess it would not be probably just その他の店 most applicable to this word. The first thing popping up in my mind was バラエティーショップ where you can find various types of household commodities, but I don't know if there are similar stores in US, Australia, Canada, UK and so forth.
Thank you, Kathy-san, then, my wonder goes on to how "General Merchandise" can be distinguished from "Miscellaneous Store". If my guess is right, 雑貨店 is closer to the former rather than the latter in its precise meaning.
I would agree with Kanazawa-san's answer if the question was asking about goods, but this term is describing a store *classification*, not what is being sold in the store per se. Further, according to the definition of "Miscellaneous Store" in the link provided by Kanazawa-san: (http://www.census.gov/epcd/naics02/def/NDEF453.HTM)
Census Bureau home page 2002 NAICS Definitions 453 Miscellaneous Store Retailers Industries in the Miscellaneous Store Retailers subsector retail merchandise from fixed point-of-sale locations (except new or used motor vehicles and parts; new furniture and house furnishings; new appliances and electronic products; new building materials; and garden equipment and supplies; food and beverages; health and personal care goods; gasoline; new clothing and accessories; and new sporting goods, hobby goods, books, and music). Establishments in this subsector include stores with unique characteristics like florists, used merchandise stores, and pet and pet supply stores as well as other store retailers. So in this instance, perhaps the "その他（の）" definition would be closer to what you need than 雑～. HTH a little...
