What is it for?...

Retention aids are used to retain paper making stock components in the sheet during the forming process, while at the same time promoting the free drainage of water.
Long paper making fibres are naturally retained on the forming wire. It is the short fibres, or fines, plus the fillers and other wet end chemicals, that have a tendency to be washed through the wire as the water drains from the stock. When applied correctly, a retention aid system will aid water release from the stock, improving machine speeds and reducing drying costs. In turn, this results in more stable running on the paper machine and a reduction in the solids lost to effluent. Related Terminology...

The components of a retention aid system can be organic or inorganic in nature. Organic products are usually synthetic polymers, although starch, a natural polymer, is used as part of some retention aid systems. Low molecular weight organic polymers are generally referred to as coagulants or fixatives. Medium to high weight organic polymers are called flocculants. Organic polymers can be used alone or in combination with others.
Retention aids from inorganic components are based typically on either aluminium species, on montmorillonite clays, or on polysilicate materials. The aluminium compounds, such as aluminium sulphate (alum), have a coagulating, charge neutralising action. The montmorillonite clays (Bentonite) and the polysilicate materials are both used as part of a multicomponent system (Hydrocol and Com

P.S. Vairs nav šaubu, ka ar size press nav domāta prese, bet gan sizing agent, jo nevar vienu un to pašu produktu izmantot par vielu un par mehānismu. Var gan runāt par vielas izmantošanu procesos: retention and sizing.
