English term or phrase: Non-rendition
Non-rendition is an analytical concept that forms part of a classification system for
utterances produced in interpreter-mediated encounters by dialogue interpreters in relation
to utterances produced by other participants (primary participants) in another language. The
taxonomy of interpreter utterances including ‘non-rendition’ was developed by Wadensjö
(1992, 1998) to go beyond the traditional units of interest in translation studies – source text
and target text – and better account for the complexity of naturally occurring interpretermediated
face-to-face interaction, in which both the progression and the content of talk are
continuously shaped by what participants add and what they take up.
