This will result in a completely optimized torque curve for the engine, and the corresponding maximum power output. If an engine prematurely exhibits spark knock during this testing with what appears to be low spark values, there are still a few options. First, check for mechanical issues or oil ingestion. Very small amounts of oil can quickly reduce the effective octane of the air/fuel mixture. Depending on the blend, oils can have effective octane ratings of about 48. It doesn't take very much 48 octane mixed with 93 octane premium fuel to bring down the average very quickly. Don't look for a calibration solution to a mechanical problem here.

  -> Yes, Grzegorz - it is safer. The amount that gets past normally-functioning rings will not affect the octane of the fuel mixture. Bad piston rings and worn cylinder walls will lead to audible piston slap.
