Osoba2: We would not expect to find the general proof because this is not the style of Egyptian mathematics. Every problem was solved using concrete numbers and then if a verification would be carried out at the end, it would use the result and these concrete, given numbers, there's no general proof within the Egyptian mathematical texts.

The text speaks of the "impossibility" of finding a papyrus with a general proof of the Pythagorean theorem because it was "not the style of Egyptian mathematics". One must understand "proof" against the background of the state of Egyptian mathematics, its lack of development along the lines beginning with known facts, proceeding through a series of logical deductions, and ending with the thing you’re trying to prove - i.e., the Greek model.

Yes, I'd agree with that. I think "verification" is a key term in the source. To me this goes better with "proof" than with "rule".

M.A.B. Raczej nie. Chodzi o to, że Egipcjanie znali sztuczkę z konkretnym trójkątem 3, 4, 5, ale nie wiedzieli, jaką ogólną regułą się to rządzi. Czy naprawdę nie wydaje wam się, że lepiej pasuje tu słowo "reguła", a nie "dowód"?

DLyons, I suppose they'll have. But still "ogólna reguła" seems more clear. But I am not so sure about it.

3x3+4x4=5x5 and similar instances with whole numbers cannot be captured by a rule (reguła) since every example is a case onto itself. A rule says "if you do this, that will happen;" here you would have to enumarate every instance of such perfect squares.

Adrian Liszewski ma chyba rację. Co o tym myślicie? Na razie najbardziej odpowiada mi "ogólna reguła" (ale nie "reguła ogólna"). To będzie tekst skierowany do nastolatków, oni muszą to rozumieć. Słowo "dowód" może wprowadzić nieporozumienie.

In this context, one can be even more specific "geometryczny dowód". And in the text this is of "twierdzenia Pitagorasa".
