Their production of cable for suspension bridges was constantly being interrupted when the worn grooves in the flame-hardened cast iron drawing blocks became too deep to allow proper machine operation. Each time the blocks were removed and cut down to eliminate the grooves, they wore out even sooner than they had previously (the effects of flame-hardening gradually decrease beneath the surface).

Though small and nearly imperceptible to the touch once the block is ground, these cracks can cause marking problems for some softer or plating quality wires. Also, the extreme pressures involved in drawing very large diameter wires can sometimes weaken the cracks enough to cause chunks of weld to chip out.To this day, however, the cracked sub-arc weld coating offers the longest working life for all blocks drawing carbon steel wires (up to 5/8" dia.) in dry lubricant. For blocks that have been cut down too thin, the weld will have to be applied to a steel sleeve that is then shrink-fitted and bolted to the block. The sleeving process more than doubles the cost of the block repair job.

They work well on blocks drawing smaller diameter wires (especially welding wire), and they are also useful for coating pulleys, sheaves, and rollers.

The latest development in block coatings involves the refinement of the HVOF process to allow the restoration of only the worn area of a prior coating.

First and foremost, the block should be ground while held between centers on
an arbor that mimics the shaft that the block will actually be running on. This ensures
that the block face will be ground concentric to the bore in order to prevent block wobble. If the bore is excessively worn or damaged, it should be machined true or sleeved. The radius between the flange and face should be made larger than the largest diameter wire that the block will draw. The most crucial dimension is the taper(s) on the face of the block. While the radius simply creates a ramp effect to get the first wire wrap started, the correct taper is needed to keep each successive wrap of wire

The text gives out the idea that they're talking about the "bobines" where the wire is draw in (enrolado).
A "capstan" is, for example in a boat, the place where you draw in the ropes. (onde se enrolam as cordas).
Another example, I'm sure many of us have sewing "capstans" at home (bobines de fio para remendar/coser roupa).
Bobine is a capstan, Bobina is a coil (in Continental Portuguese).I hope with these examples, the guys from Brazil can tell you the Brazilian term for Bobine.

The single most important process in block maintenance is grinding, and how it is done is tantamount to the overall block performance. Grinding is the process that controls concentricity, radius, taper, and ultimately finish. It is most criticai to the creation of double (multiple) tapers, and steps.

Concentricity. Most blocks are ground on tool post grinders or chucked on a turning lathe. However, the best method to grinding blocks is achieved by grinding on arbors. In this scenario, the block is ground while held between centers on an arbor that mimics the shaft on which the block will actually run. This ensures that the block face will be ground concentric to the bore. This method will also indicate if a bore is excessively worn or damaged, and whether or not it should be machined true or sleeved. See Photo

Blocks are referred to by several names, including blocks or capstans (most common), drums, heads or buli wheels. No matter how they are referred, most, if not ali of the following information will apply. Some of the more common block elements include bore, face, flange, gripper slot, keyway, radius, taper, step and stripper slots.
