English term or phrase: step
Steps. A step may sometimes be required when a wiredrawer wishes to increase the wire bundle size on the final stripper block or buli wheel. A "relief' step (as it is sometimes known) may also be used to relieve the tightness of the wire on the block. A step may also be necessary on a single-taper block if the wire initially climbs, but then starts to struggle climbing as the bundle weight increases. This results in the wire backing down, and overlapping at the radius (sometimes even back into the flange), prior to achieving the full bundle size. Steps are used on many blocks, sometimes in conjunction with double tapers (as previously mentioned) to compensate for the shrinking inside diameter of the coil as the wire cools and contracts.

As a result the wire becomes very tight against the block face, making it increasingly difficult to push the wire up into the accumulated bundle. The size of the step should be
smaller than the smallest wire being drawn to prevent overlap when approaching full bundle size. Normal steps range from .240 to .125 in. per side. Keep in mind when adjusting tapers and steps to increase bundle size each case must be evaluated separately.
