O que acontece na prática, pude confirmar na minha pesquisa: geralmente se usam onomatopéias (PLOC, TUM), mas evidentemente não seria uma tradução adequada para um trabalho sério. Dessa forma, acredito que a melhor tradução para o termo seria em caso de barulho mais baixo livre de estalos ou sem estalos e, no caso de um barulho alto, sem estrondos.
