Discussion

meirs Jul 3, 2010:
Advertising need not be zoologically correct The squirrel metaphor is zoo. correct (birds do not collect eggs for a rainy day - just hatch them) - but "nuts" can be misconstrued in more than one way. Eggs on the other hand rings also the "Easter" bell, so the sound better in ads.
Marlene Curtis Jul 3, 2010:
Right... Here in the USA the term "nest eggs" is widely used for senior citizens' savings, the ads even show them nurturing giant eggs (of course, times are harder now and the eggs have shrunk considerably).
meirs Jul 3, 2010:
Squirrels are normally associated with savings Like to "squirrel money away" (for a rainy day), etc.
"retirement next eggs" is a similar expression
Marlene Curtis Jul 3, 2010:
???? squirrels???
meirs Jul 3, 2010:
Make more of the money they saved for retirement Stretch - the money to get more for $$$ at lower Central America prices
Retirement nest eggs - money put aside/saved for retirement.
My only problem is that a squirrel saves nuts not eggs in its nest, but "nuts" can have a bad connotation in English.
