Art/Literary - Poetry & Literature / adult romance novel
English term or phrase: we were supposed to be
"Given that we were both employed at the Gentlemen’s Club, we had to work together, and it was best for all concerned if we both behaved like the professionals that we were supposed to be."

Explanation:
Hello, Oliveira. This is the most common way to translate that. If there is no other meaning intended, this is it.

True that most common does not mean correct. But this is correct and common.

If you prefer a variation, aside from your three suitable suggestions, what about "que supostamente seríamos."
It is not mistranslation, but word choice. Have fun.

Asker: I understand, but most common doesn't mean correct. I see lots of translation errors everyday!

Asker: I don't believe so. That's not what the passive-to-active conversion is telling me. Clearly, a glaring example of mistranslation.

Asker: Thank you for the new suggestion. I'm considering all options before making up my mind.

Asker: PS: Actually, both interpretations are possible. When I close the question, I'll post more information on the topic. Thank you.

Asker: Desculpe a confusão.

Explanation:
The meaning of que deveríamos ser and que supostamente éramos can be the same in this context, but I think que deveríamos ser is more commonly used.
To me supostamente éramos sounds like they were not real professionals and were just pretending.

Notes to answerer
