Explanation:
New rock on ground quarry service sparks increasing interest

The comprehensive rock-on-ground (ROG) blasting service - pioneered and developed by African Explosives Limited (AEL) - is attracting increasing interest in the South African quarrying industry.

Revealing this new trend, AEL quarry services business manager Franky Botha explains that operators in the quarrying industry have become increasingly aware of the need to concentrate on their core business.

In addition there is an increasing awareness that the efficiency of the blasting process has a significant impact on the overall costs of their quarrying operations.

“This is where AEL's rock-on-ground service can provide significant benefits.”

“As the leader in bulk explosives technology and electronic initiating systems, we design blasting programmes tailored to meet customers' requirements in order to maximise the downstream benefits of any quarrying operation,” says Botha.

AEL takes responsibility for the full blasting operation - from initial blast design and layout to drilling priming, loading, tie-up and firing.

“This allows the company to deliver broken rock according to agreed parameters, which suit each individual operation's unique haulage and crushing requirements - thereby enabling the customer to focus on the core quarrying activity,” Botha adds.

AEL also offers vibration monitoring for environment-sensitive operations.

“This safeguards customers from claims resulting from possible inaccurate perceptions that their blasting operations have caused damage to nearby buildings,” says Botha.

He adds that the company - together with the customer - inspects the blast and monitors the subsequent loading, hauling and crushing operations.

Botha points out that ROG is a tailor-made service designed to provide the best blasting solution for each customer's circumstances.

Depending on customer requirements, services such as laser profiling, borehole tracking, vibration monitoring and velocity of detonation measurements are performed regularly.

“This comprehensive, ROG service ensures improved efficiency, productivity and cost-effectiveness,” says Botha. He adds that ROG includes such benefits as: improved pit-wall stability and floor conditions, reduced need for secondary breaking, improved loading rates because of finer fragmentation, increased fill factor on trucks, a reduction in crushing costs, standing time in the plant, and wear and tear on the crusher and belts

“Savings and improvements like these are invaluable to the quarrying industry in these difficult economic times,” comments Botha.
