English term or phrase: hard and soft urban spaces
North Woolwich Public Realm, London Borough of Newham (2009)
Project Manager for the design of this scheme to provide a series of hard and soft urban spaces in North Woolwich. The aim of the scheme was to improve the experience of living in the community through sympathetic improvements to the public realm. The project was about changing individuals’ perceptions of what their community can be and then providing the physical means to realise these changes over the long term.
The delivery of the project involved developing links with community groups and organising consultation events aimed at identifying problems and issues and engaging young people in the design process through sports and activities. The project was delivered from 2009 to 2013, including a Multi-Use Games Area as Phase One, followed by a public square and children’s play areas.
