4.2 DETERMINATION OF LOCAL ICE LOADS
For Offshore structures it is typically global (resultant) loads which are of most interest.
This is because it is the global load that will dictate the mooring forces or bottom-founding forces depending on if the unit is floating or fixed.
In addition, for this case, local ice loads need to be considered, as local forces can influence the integrity of the FSUs plating and framing.
When determining local ice loads it is necessary to consider what is termed the "pressure-area" effect.
This is the phenomenon where smaller loaded areas experience higher loads than larger areas.
The following general relationship is used to describe the inverse relationship between pressure and the local area (design area).
Equation 1 General Pressure-Area relationship
C is typically in the range of 0.5 to 5 MPa and e is typically be in the range of -0.25 to -0.7 .
The values vary among datasets.
It is therefore important to define appropriate local areas for consideration as the area under consideration will directly affect the design pressure.
ISO 19906 requires that "Design contact areas shall be considered based on the local structural configuration, including frame spacing, plate thickness and appendage dimensions.
The size and placement of the local contact areas shall be selected to ensure that the most critical cases are addressed."
Figure 15, extracted from ISO 19906 illustrates the general approach where the load patch area (wL x ad) takes a different size based on the structural element being considered.
Figure 15 ISO 19906 Definition of load areas for local actions
ISO19906 does not give further instructions on the values of wl and ad, and as the FSU structure is more representative of a ship than an offshore structure the load areas illustrated in Figure 15 need to be considered further.
For this case, the approach used in the Finnish-Swedish ice class rules (Reference 7) to define the local area load patch length is taken.
Table 3 presents the load patch length assumed for local pressure determination.
