Reading Gore Vidal's Messiah, I came across the phrase ascribed to the Emperor Augustus "quick as boiled asparagus".Does anybody know if it belongs to him? And what could it mean?

When you boil asparagus it becomes slippery. And it is very difficult to take them they drop from fork or spoon.
