To avoid ground loops, the system must provide a single-point ground. In Intrinsically Safe (IS) applications you float the 3500 rack and *reference* it to an intrinsically safe ground instead of to earth ground. RS-232 communications are *referenced* to earth ground so that you must use a serial data isolator to keep the rack isolated from earth ground. RS-485 uses an isolated ground and hence requires no additional isolation.
