MEMBRANSKI I AKCIJSKI POTENCIJAL

1. Živčani signal (impuls) naziva se akcijski potencijal. Akcijski potencijal je električno nabijanje neurona kroz membranu kao rezultat naglog ulaska natrija u neuron, a nakon čega uslijedi izlazak kalija iz neurona.
2. U "mirovanju", unutrašnjost neurona ima negativan naboj u odnosu na vanjski dio. Natrijevi ioni aktivno se izbacuju iz neurona, a kalijevi istjeću van.
Natrijevi ioni mogu difuzijom prolaziti kroz membranu, dok su kalijevi ioni uglavnom blokirani.
3. Akcijski potencijal nastaje po pravilu sve ili ništa.
4. Kada se naboj (razlika potencijala) na membrani smanjuje natrij počinje sve lakše ulaziti u neuron. Ako je razlika membranskog potencijala dosegnula kritičnu razinu (prag podražaja), natrijevi ioni naglo ulaze u neuron. Tada dolazi do inverzije membranskog potencijala (od negativnih na pozitivne vrijednosti), a što se naziva akcijski potencijal.
5. Neposredno nakon akcijskog potencijala nastaje refraktorno razdoblje, tijekog kojeg ne može doći do novog akcijskog potencijala.
6. Akcijski potencijal se kontinuirano obnavlja u pravilnim udaljenostima na aksonu ulaskom natrijevih iona u akson. Visina akcijskog potencijala stalna je tijekom aksona. Mjesta obnavljanja akcijskog potencijala nalaze se između mijelinske ovojnice, pa bolje mijelinizirani aksoni bolje provode impuls.
7. Postoje neuroni koji ne provode impuls putem akcijskog potencijala, već imformacije prenose na način stupnjevitih promjena intenziteta membranskog potencijala

To oversimplify: Our brain cells communicate with one another via synaptic transmission–one brain cell releases a chemical (neurotransmitter) that the next brain cell absorbs. This communication process is known as “neuronal firing.” When brain cells communicate frequently, the connection between them strengthens. Messages that travel the same pathway in the brain over & over begin to transmit faster & faster. With enough repetition, they become automatic. That’s why we practice things like hitting a golf ball–with enough practice, we can go on automatic pilot.
