Absenciu fantázie prvýkrát dostal do povedomia ľudí už v roku 1880 Francis Galton. Znova sa o nej začalo hovoriť v roku 2005. Nemenovaný pacient navštívil ordináciu neurológa profesora Adama Zemana z Exeterskej univerzity. Po krátkej intervencii si pacient uvedomil, že si vo svojej mysli nedokáže vybaviť nijaký obraz. Akoby sa náhle ocitol v tme.
