sick leave

Preston, I'm assuming that you are trying to differentiate in your mind among these various reasons to note that someone is not at work. SICK LEAVE is absence because the employee has a "long" illness, surgery followed by recovery, for example. A SICK DAY or two, in contrast, is absence because the employee has the flu or some other short illness. MATERNITY LEAVE is an arrangement with the employer for the employee to be absent for a stated period of time before and after a baby is born. There is also PATERNITY LEAVE in some companies, for the father. LEAVE OF ABSENCE is permission from the employer to be absent for any reason agreeable to the employer. This leave may be with or without pay, but it often means the employee keeps benefits and of course keeps the job.
TARDINESS means being late in arriving for work. ABSENTEEISM means being absent more than reasonable or being absent without sufficient explanation. Hope these differentiations help. Rosemary Schmid, Charlotte, NC USA
