As with everything, there is a good use and a base use of everything, in this case of language.
As we read newspapers (I also work as a journalist for Spanish media and others for more than 20 years, and know quite well the field), we also eat apples (one a day keeps the doctors away), but we choose the good ones and not the bad/rotten ones.
And I think, although I dont' belong to the Real Academia de la Lengua Española (with which I also disagree sometimes), it is like that with everything in life. We have to choose.
I must also say I am demanding and critic with myself, when necessary.
But my hair stands on end when I read newspapers, and see so many mistakes, even grammatical. Like 'jÓven with an accent, to put a simple example.
It also happens to me when I read badly translated book, and I have to automatically do proofreading.
I can't agree either that newspapers "help writers", and I know more than a few...
In summary, I personally believe in and search for excellence. Why not choose the best?

Cars break down (y los periodistas cometen errores), but we're not going to stop driving (y no vamos a parar de leer tampoco). Newspapers may not be perfect, but they're not equally imperfect (that is, some are better than others) and, more importantly, they reflect usage, knowledge of which helps writers choose the words that are most likely to be well received.

El siguiente comentario es general, y no sólo para este caso.
Me llama mucho la atención que a menudo se citan artículos de periódicos como referencia y/o como fuente de conocimiento, ¡con lo mal que se escribe en casi todos los diarios del mundo hispanohablante (que es el que conozco)!
