I need to know if the word "standards" can be correctly translated as "estandares" (with accent on the first "a"??? Personally, I prefer the word "normas", however, on the State Dept of Edu. website for California, the word "estandares" is used. I have checked several dictionaries and have not found "estandares" As a professional would you use "estandares" Where would I check to asertain when a word has officially become standard Spanish?

Coincido con usted en preferir la palabra norma, sin embargo, como usted lo menciona la palabra estandar es usada por organizaciones oficiales. El diccionario de dudas de la Lengua Española de Manuel seco dice lo siguiente:
"La Real Academia Española registra el nombre masculino estándar como adaptado del inglés standard, con el sentido de "tipo, modelo, patrón, nivel." Igualmente acoge estandarizar, "tipificar, ajustar a un tipo, modelo o norma y estandarización como "acción y efecto de estandarizar". Acepta también, pero no prefiere, las formas estandardizar y estandardización.
El plural de estándar, sustantivo o adjetivo es estándares. " (con acento).

I agree Hilda. I also prefer the word "normas" but the other is frequesntly used as well. I would translate it as "Estándares Estatales" o "del Estado"
