CONTEXT> author is an archaeologist (quite conservative) commenting on the textual transmission of the Pentateuch, more specifically on how numbers might have been "mangled".

so far my best shot, albeit somewhat loose, is "dañado/s en transmisión"

Aunque no haya sido intencional, el efecto de repetidas malinterpretaciones (por parte de una larga línea de copistas) es que el texto original se fue tergiversando.

Anoche al cerrar mi computadora me vinieron a la mente dos términos en referencia a este posting: trastocados y desvirtuados, precisamente coincidiendo con tu percepción de que más que de una acción, se trata de una consecuencia, de ahí que quizás convendría ampliar en la versión castellana lo que en inglés resulta tan abreviado en un término tan explicíto como "garbled"... mi humilde opinión y aporte.
