The rhyming sounds rarely add significance because in poems like Le Roman de Renart, which will be the source of my examples, they do not systematically link words related by meaning, but they give an impression of inevitability to the events of the story and a childlike pleasure to the ear. The translator will gain from the rhymes what the poet does, and the challenge of the enterprise for him will be in telling the very same story in the same way with a comparable appearance of ease.

lo que gana/recibe/capta el poeta

El clave para entender la frase es reconocer que el "does" refiere al "gain" de la primera parte de la frase. O sea, el traductor gana/recibe/capta de la rima lo mismo que lo que ganó/recibió/captó el poeta.

"Does" aquí no significa directamente "hacer" sino que funciona como verbo auxiliar, "he does gain", sin embargo se suprime "gain" para evitar su repetición y se sobreentiende.
