Do you tell stories/tales?

Context is everything. To tell anecdotes sounds somewhat funny in Spain but it might be right somewhere in South America. Unless you're asking someone to tell you anecdotes about a definite matter. In English, I would rather use "tales" or "stories", never heard of "Do you tell anecdotes",...I mean: anecdotes what about?. Food for thought :)
