"Académico" is apropriate if your visitor is a professor. Other terms are estudiante, estudioso, doctorando, etc. "Practicante" is used in Spain in the sense of "general practitioner" so it would be inapropriate here. "Especialista" or "experto" might be suitable for "practitioner.
