You are right in stating that frequency is not a convenient method by itself. It has to have a backup. You may have noticed that my entries come quite later, after otherr options have been entered. If the options and refereces (I read all) are OK they get my agree. If not I check for the "out of context" possibility. If I do think that there is a better option, I start In my case by checking frequencies which is obviously basic. Next starts a research for options, not just one that is dear to your heart as is frequently the case. Knowing what you are talking about is also basic. Recently, a peer needed help with a mechanical related paper. I offered her an option based on the interpretation of an exploded view of the mechanism, informatiom that she did not have but that is available on the web and was consulted by me to offer an option. So there goes Google frequency. One has to be careful when stating facts without a responsible view.
Thanks for the explanation, but to be honest I'm not really interested in the term (my 4 year old daughter could find a good enough equivalent in a dictionary). I was questioning the reliance on "number of google hits" as being a definitive and conclusive form of 'supporting evidence' for suggestions. I was playing devil's advocate ;) (I often do!!!) Slothm has now clarified his personal method of searching on google and how he 'quotes' the hits - although it remains for me that simply stating 100,000 google hits is not supporting evidence. (Not the case here with slothm - but many do). Again thanks for the sharing and explaining (it's another example of how team's could be useful, your own specialised, 100% trustable, group of source and target native term specialists ;) ).
There is a small, almost imperceptible difference between "barcos de pesca" and "barcos pesqueros". While they are one and the same thing, actually, when we talk about the former we are referring to a type of ship that is manufactured (more often than not, this implies she has not made her maiden voyage yet). "Barcos pesqueros" are those that are actually used or have been used in fishing activities. In short, manufacturers will refer to the barcos de pesca they offer to fishing businesses and those fishing businesses will call them "nuestros barcos pesqueros" when they are using them. Hope my explanation is clear enough.
Well surely that warrants me answering with "barcos de pesca", being the most used option in the www. and you should rescind your answer because it is not the most common, no?!? ;@)
Simply the number of hits doesn't prove a thing. What if, for example, there is a famous music group called los "Pesqueros" - who knows what % of the hits refer to the group and having nothing to do with fishing boats. Or perhaps "McDonald's" have a 'fish-burger' available called "pesqueros", etc., etc. Unless the hits are in context a single-word search doesn't prove much.
I just sent you all a private email - I just wish to add, but without sending 5 more separate emails! Personally, I decide if a question + answer will add value to the glossary - if I think that it doesn't add value then I won't give free machine translation PLUS free editing, i.e. I don't give an answer, I ask the 'asker' to provide evidence of their research / attempted answer and mark it as 'non-pro'. If someone else wants to provide free translations then that's their concern. ;@)
Have you tried a dictionary? THe kudoz rules are that you should have exhausted all possible means to find the answer yourself; even the most basic SP <> EN dictionary would have this term.
