Social protections are particularly important in later life, when opportunities and ability to earn income are diminished. Particularly pensions and disability and caring payments. Pensions are currently inadequate across the region, and favour the wealthiest. These inequalities are likely to widen as the population ages and the pension system is further stretched. Currently the pension system is highly regressive.
