"Los frenos de tambor con zapatas aún se emplean en muchos coches, en las cuatro ruedas o solamente en las traseras (en este caso se montan frenos de disco en las ruedas delanteras). En los sistemas corrientes, el pedal del freno actúa sobre las cuatro ruedas, mientras que el de mano solo bloquea las ruedas traseras. La palanca del freno de mano posee un trinquete que permite que siga actuando al quedar el coche estacionado."
