Las operaciones de descarga del petróleo o de lo que sea se realizan en el mar a través de una boya o terminal de descarga flotante unida a tierra por tuberías submarinas, con lo cual el barco no tiene que entrar en puerto. La boya se denomina en inglés SPM terminal (single point mooring terminal). El barco es un buque tanque normal pero debe estar equipado con los equipos de descarga (tuberías, válvulas, seguridad, etc.) específicos para estas operaciones.
