arandela grande Explanation: From what I have seen, it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with "fenders" as in the previous suggestion: Fender Washer Flat washer made from low carbon steel/minimal physical properties (http://www.masterproducts.com/product.html) A.: According to a dictionary of etymology (word origins), a fender is something that protects by keeping other things off. The word actually dates back to 1615 and comes from the Middle English word fendour, which means defender. The fender washer is nothing more than a washer that protects the surface of an object (http://www.mindlesscrap.com/stumpme/04-01.htm) The other things I have been able to find out: a) they are also called "penny washers" (British term) and b) they are bigger than ordinary washers, because most texts refer to "big," "oversized," etc. In some cases, the head of the screw is enough to prevent the turnbuckle from turning. If not, an oversized washer (penny washer to the Brits, fender washer to the Yanks) may be needed (http://www.briontoss.com/wwwboard/messages/4597.html) the hole in the shield. We used a large washer (fender washer) which caught the edge of the shield and a hex head sheet metal screw.
