El pez espada (Xiphiidae) comprende sólo una especie (Xiphias gladius). Si se exceptúan dos especies de marlines, todas las especies de peces de pico y de pez espada tienen una distribución geográfica muy amplia, pero no todas ellas se encuentran necesariamente en todos los océanos. Estas especies constituyen un alimento excelente y son también muy valiosas en la pesca deportiva.
