English term or phrase: I had you down as an uphill gardener.
Two men are sitting in a country pub and talking about women. The younger one has to get married soon but doesn't know how to find a wife for himself.

Jack: In here, I've got some particular favourites who, to use the vernacler, go like the clappers.
Ralph: Is that a good thing?
Jack: Must confess, I had you done as an uphill gardener. Nevermind, let's ses if we can find you the lady of your dreams.

The older guy says, he has to confess, he had always thought that the young guy was gay, so he\'s surprised that he is now looking for a good lady wife!

Should be: I had you down as an uphill gardener

But now that he has apparantly got it wrong, he\'s more than happy to help the young lad look for the lady of his dreams (even if the young guy isn\'t too sure if \'going like the clappers\' is a virtue in a wife\'!!)

agree  Liv Bliss: Ah, we translators live an interesting life, albeit often vicariously. Was anyone else struck by that terrific turn of phrase "go like the clappers"? (I think a transatlantic equivalent might be "[screw] like a mink.")

-> **** like a rabbit....is always another lovely turn of phrase

agree  Refugio: Hopefully clappers without the clap.

agree  Christopher Crockett: Well, it's not in the O.E.D., but then neither is "clappers," so you could well be right.
