I found this expression incomprehensible at first sight and had to do a bit of research, and reconstruct the Spanish expression it comes from, to work out what it means.

This refers to the fact that tropical montane cloud forest (TMCF) in Mexico is distributed in a series of "islands", which are therefore described as an "archipelago". It corresponds to the Spanish expression "distribución tipo archipiélago", which is found in this context:
