This reminds me of the terminology used in consulting projects. Here is how the terms are used there:
approach = procedure, concept of how things (e.g., analyses) will be done
methodology = (set of) methods or tools applied (e.g., analytic concepts)
performi the assignment = conduct the project / carry out the task (depending on what it is exactly. In the case of consulting "assignments", the term is often translated as "Projekt" in German)

Just another interpretation...
1) Approach: Initiating the work with ideas or actions intended to deal with the assignment at hand. It's like a "plan of attack."
2) Methodology: The system of working methods followed in a particular and orderly manner based on the "approach."
3) Performing the assignment: The final carrying out of the particular assignment as learned from the initial approach and subsequent methodology.
