fact that the quantity of base
incorporated in the particle cores is
greater than that needed to neutralize
the acid surfactant. The neutralizing
strength of an overbased detergent is
measured by its total base number
(TBN). TBN is defined as the quantity
of acid, expressed in terms of the
equivalent number of milligrams of
potassium hydroxide that is required to
neutralize all basic constituents present
in 1 g of overbased detergent.
