English term or phrase:Will & Grace land
I'm subtitling a TV series for teenagers. A boy and a girl are having a conversation.
(Girl) -You should stay too. You live here [in this house].
(Boy) -Less and less. It's not the Will & Grace land it once was.
I know Will & Grace is a TV series too, but I have never watched it, so I have no idea of the meaning of "Will & Grace land".
Can I translate it as "this is not like the house of Will & Grace any longer" or is there something more appropriate?
Gallagy and Charles, your comments were especially helpful.
The situation is a bit complicated, but basically: the guy is gay and he lives with the girl and her grandma. He and she are very good friends, though they almost went to bed once, when they were drunk.
Your comments about Will & Grace helped me to make a more confident decision about the translation. I think Charles' idea of a happy and harmonious home really fits in.
Charles, if you would like to turn that into an answer, I would be happy to close the question as the most helpful answer, though all of the ideas that were shared really helped me.
It could just mean a happy and harmonious home, which Will & Grace's home was. It could mean that they've quarrelled, which Will & Grace never really did. It could mean that what had been an untroubled friendship has become soured by a problematic romantic or sexual relationship, which was never going to be an issue in Will & Grace because he was completely gay and she was completely straight, so there was never any risk of their very close and supportive friendship being complicated by one of them developing an unrequited crush on the other or by jealousy of their relationships with others, for example. As Gallagy says, which aspect of the Will & Grace paradigm is relevant depends entirely on the context.
Who are the people in the house and their relationship to each other? More context is needed. The programme was a sitcom featuring a gay man and straight woman living happily together and raised various issues about treatment of the LGBT community...so really need to know WHO the people are in this house and what relationship the boy/girl have? Or are they siblings?...BUT it's nothing to do with Elvis or Graceland that's for sure.
Is this a play on the name of Elvis Presley's mansion which was called Graceland? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graceland
In other words, the house in question is no longer a comfortable or pleasant place to live?
