The Excel program normally recalculates every formula in a spreadsheet each time a new piece of data is added. If there are a great many formulas, this can take a few seconds (depending on the speed of the computer). It can be a nuisance when inputting data, because after entering each figure you have to wait until the program has finished recalculating. So you can suppress calculation until you have finished inputting data, and then use the "calculate now" option (F9 in the version I use) or restore automatic calculation.
