[from a brochure of a grill manufacturer]
"DRIP PANS
Line the catch pan of most XXX gas grills with the small pans or use for cooking side dishes. Use large drip pans under foods cooked by the Indirect method. Ten pans per pack."
...as far as I know side dishes accompany the main dish and normally hold vegetables and the like... does the text mean that this drip pans which should normally used to collect fat drippings could be used this type of side dish?

Presumably, they are referring to the type of side dishes that need cooking IN some kind of container, rather then the main things that can be cooked simply laid ON the grill...
Perhaps the drip pan can be removed and placed on top of the grill instead, to slightly lessen the heat reaching the cooking containers (and also make them easier to handle)?

Yes you can either use the pans as drip pans, or use them to cook side dishes, food that will accompany the grilled meat.
