English term or phrase: disconnects
M. When switching electrical disconnects "ON", turn your head opposite to the panel and look away from the switch itself (in case of a flash explosion from a direct short circuit).

[Note: This is a step from a lockout/tagout procedure. Previously, locks and tags were applied, the machine was repaired and now locks and tags have been removed.
I'm afraid I don't understand "disconnects" in this sentence.
Could this be a typo or something?
Could anybody please help me out?
Thanks!

switches used to disconnect electrical power from the machine, or the line
Explanation:
Kind of like the circuit breaker you have in your house, but usually for higher power.

Think Dr. Frankenstein when Igor used that BIG switch to send the lightning to the monster. THAT was a 'disconnect' in a broad sense.

It is a noun in the sentence.

The author probably did not want to use SWITCH again (switching the switches) and hit on disconnect. Here they are synonyms.
