English term or phrase: inverted chips, inverted components
"Sensing ***Inverted*** IC Chips
Surface-mount integrated circuits have identification information printed on their top surface; D12 Expert sensors have the ability to “see” this printed side as a “light” condition. The bottom of the component reflects less light, allowing ***inverted*** components to be sensed."

...is it the position of the components that is "seen" by the sensor as inverted? (if not, what is inverted?)

Explanation:
Yes, it is the orientation of the components that is being sensed here; in this specific case, it means LITERALLY 'upside down'; clearly, these SM components have to be fitted to the board the right way up, or the circuit wouldn't work!

Probably at an even earlier stage than quality control; I imagine this is at the board assembly stage, and as these little SM components are SO TINY, it\'s a real hassle getting them the right way round by hand (tweezers and magnifying glasss!), so it must be a nightmare for a machine to do it.

...Or it may be during packaging following component manufacture, since most users will want them supplied all the same way round for easy of machine fitting...
